Sparkle And Shine

Spakle christmas trend aw11

At a James Bond-themed party last weekend I had no qualms about what I should wear; it had to be sequins. Eye-catching, glam, tongue-in-cheek and figure-flattering – what could be more James Bond-esque? My full-length gold maxi dress (as featured in Vogue magazine) was a snip at just £80 from River Island, and I felt a million dollars in it.

I’m not the only one having a pre-Christmas love affair with sparkles. At a music showcase on Thursday I spotted Liz McClarnon blinging-up the place in a gold sequin mini dress, Kelly Rowland rocked a silver sequin evening dress on Sunday’s X Factor show and the TOWIE cast is all sequined-up in the video for their Christmas charity single. The stars know that lashings of sparkle will get you noticed and add seasonal glamour to any occasion.

If you’re up for some all-out figure-hugging glitz, a fitted maxi is the way to go. Now I’ve got my gold dress, I’m seriously tempted by Project D’s silver sequin full length dress, and the black, side split maxi dress at ASOS is tres glam. For just a hint of sparkle, Ted Baker’s “Themm” dress has a more subtle sequin top, and for a big old bargain, Boohoo’s sequin stripe jersey maxi is only £6!

If you’d rather sparkle in a shorter length, Rare’s drape dress is racy and rocking, whilst French Connection Fast sequinned dress is utterly girly. For something brave and striking, the ruby red bodycon dress with mixed sequin and mesh by ASOS is a showstopper.

But sparkle isn’t just for dresses. There are some gorgeous glitzy shoes available including Chinese Laundry’s “Lady Bug” party platforms, Kurt Geiger’s classic gold courts and Red or Dead’s “Shirley” silver glitter bar court shoe is great if you want practical party wear that still shimmers.

For a touch of sparkle, a sequin separate is wise; check out Boohoo’s long-sleeved shrug, Donna Karan’s luxurious cashmere blend shrug and the cute sequin jacket by Warehouse. In the evening, set an LBD alight with Topshop’s knitted gold sequin jacket, and to make a bold statement during the day, dare to wear Biba’s sequin jacket, Antik Batik’s embellished georgette jacket or Stella McCartney’s stunning cropped sequin embellished crepe jacket with your jeans.

And finally, if a guy is going to work sequins, there’s no point being bashful; go hell for leather with the gut-bustingly brilliant silver sequin jacket by Unconditional.
