Rocking The Mod Look

The Mod LookAlthough we’re unlikely to be adopting humongous beehives anytime soon (although Jean Paul Gautier’s AW11/12 models certainly didn’t hold back), Amy’s love of a polo shirt, skinny jeans and ballet pumps is sure to bolster the mod trend following the singer’s untimely death this summer.

Whilst mod dressing won’t rob you of your femininity, it is slightly sexless. The original mod movement was hugely influenced by jazz and French cinema, taking its followers some way away from the mainstream. Even back in the day, mod men and women veered towards similar, androgynous styling – and that aesthetic fits perfectly with the mood of Autumn 2011. Even this season’s swing dresses carry the whiff of sixties-style androgyny, popularised back then by the likes of Twiggy and Mia Farrow.

To nail this trend, you need to go the whole hog; think Carnaby Street in the 60s, go-go dancing, Mary Quant and Twiggy-crops. A classic polo shirt really only works this season with Capri trousers or a seasonal mini skirt, and a super-short tunic dress with anything less than knee-high boots will completely miss the mark. If you want to keep it glam, consider a two piece suit, or a swing jacket, and always add a pair of vintage-style tights to the ensemble. Keep jewellery to a minimum, but cute silk scarves and Mary Jane heels are more than welcome.  And last, but most definitely not least, when you’re doing the mod thang, your retro-style tote bag will always finish the look perfectly.

Just one word of warning: Once you’ve got this look together, riding a scooter and listening to ska may be optional…but it’s pretty irresistible!
