Power To Your Jumper

The Power Knit Trend

Don’t believe the hype; there is nothing frumpy, dumpy or otherwise unflattering about knitwear. Not this season, anyway. Vivienne Westwood’s Red Label led the way on the AW11 catwalks and the trend for punch-packing knits is now taking hold on the high street.

A practical choice on our chilly island, knits can be hugely warming and funky-looking, or sleeker and more stylish with plenty of “cling factor”. Thanks to an array of statement prints and colours, there is absolutely nothing boring about this year’s power knits and many of the styles are as suited to a Christmas party as they are for low-key nights in front of a roaring fire at your local bar.

You can choose from a range of wool including alpaca, lambs, cashmere, merino, angora and mohair, or you can opt for knitted cotton. But, fabrics aside, the main quality you’re looking for in order to nail the AW11 power knit trend is high impact, whether that’s with volume, colour, pattern or fit.

From casual, knitted dresses like Kookai’s ‘dress code’ jumper dress to the full-on impact of M Missoni’s chunky knitted poncho, there really is a power-knit for everyone.

I’m particularly fond of Cooperative Designs’ long striped dress which is a little bit hippy and very edgy. I’m also tipping Dickins & Jones’ short sleeved jumper – which would look awesome with sky high heels and tapered trousers – and the ute as you like fairisle knit jumper dress by Boohoo, which is a total bargain and perfect for wearing to work over the winter months.

If you’re looking for a full-on power knit for Christmas Day celebrations, or the office party, I’d recommend Motel’s head-turner in bright red and black, Topshop’s knitted pleat pointelle dress (power knitting’s answer to the LBD), and Eternal Child’s amazing knitted dress with contrast brocade and stripes which is bound to be a talking point at any seasonal get together.
