Meet The New Animal Print

The New Animal Print mood boardsForget leopards, tigers and (!) zebras. This season’s new animal print is all about the birds, the butterflies…and the horses.

Miuccia Prada is no stranger to trend-setting, and the Miu Miu 40s-style bird print dresses on the AW11/12 catwalk got this particular ball rolling, sparking an early autumnal trend that quickly filtered down to the high street.

Birds were just the start. Now a swathe of butterfly adorned separates and dresses are fluttering into stores, closely followed by horse prints, which work in a similarly winsome and wholly adorable way.

These prints are much softer than the animal prints we’re used to wearing. Unlike leopard designs, there are no icky connotations to grapple with when you wear a beautiful bird design. Rather than a hint of brash, these prints and motifs evoke elegance, playfulness and femininity. And they’re perfect for a transitional time of year when you have to pack away the playsuits – but aren’t quite ready to wrap up in bulky jumpers and knit-dresses.

As for choosing which to wear, birds are best if you want to project an air of grace, and they work particularly well if you love 40s and 50s inspired fashion.

Butterflies are ultra girly and look gorgeous on cute dresses and floaty maxis. You can team them with tougher separates to balance the look, or just add fabulously feminine accessories to make an anti-minimal, anti-masculine statement.

For the cooler ladies, a horse print is the way to go. If you love your jeans to death and harbour a love of all things Americana, horse print dresses and tunics will live in your working wardrobe for months to come. You can even dig out your cowboy boots and go for an authentic Western vibe, or be doubly on-trend with a horse print shirt and a midi length denim skirt.

Just remember that these prints should be worn to express the type of dresser you are, so plump for the one that best puts your fashion ethos and personality across.

And if you can’t stand birds or butterflies – and horses don’t make you feel like galloping – maybe Urban Outfitters’ multicoloured, loose-fit bee print shirt, Dorothy Perkins’ cat print dress or even Topshop’s rabbit print purse might appeal instead…
