Mary Katrantzou Dresses

Re-seeing the catwalk collections in the tents is always a highlight of London Fashion Week.  Topshop has made it even easier by putting all its New Generation sponsored designers in a swanky outdoor hut overlooking the river.  Here, I got to see the likes of Holly Fulton, Mary Katrantzou and David Koma in detail.  This new generation of designers consistently raises the bar in design and execution.  They’re so slick and business-minded, it’s easy to forget they’re still relative newcomers.  Holly Fulton in particular (below) has the most immaculately finished samples and considers the overall look of her collections.  Clothing, accessories, jewellery, even her illustrations, all possess Fulton’s graphic handwriting.

Another new name whose execution impresses is David Koma (below).  Now in his third season, his undulating skater dresses are even more beautiful inspected at close quarters.  I also got an eyeful of his jewellery that wasn’t so visible on the catwalk.  How fierce are these ‘pleated’ metal rings and cuffs!

Mary Katrantzou’s latest photo-print collection (top and below) took its inspiration from design magazines like World of Interiors.  Each and every piece – printed with elegant living room scenes and soft furnishings – is an immaculately made work of art.  The lampshade skirts in particular are worthy of a plinth at the Tate.

There is also some really impressive shoe action going on in the New Gen hut.  Chau Har Lee‘s lethal-looking ‘blade’ heels need to be seen in the flesh to be believed (below).  Definitely a new name to watch.

Finally, J.W.Anderson is known for his youth-culture inspired menswear but found women were snapping up his accessories and shoes so has now started designing for us.  About time!  I gravitated straight towards these work-boots-with-a-twist (below).  I mean, really, who else would come up with a Swarovski-jewelled workboot and make it look this fabulous?
