Just Cruisin’

And they’re in!  November sees the first drop of the new Cruise collections and what a bumper crop it is.

Pre-collections, which arrive in November (‘Cruise’) and June (‘pre-fall’), have become hugely popular with big brands as they have a longer selling season and are generally less statementy than the main ready-to-wear collections.  As Proenza Schouler’s Jack Lazaro put it recently, “I feel like ready-to-wear has become the new couture.  The pre-collections and the secondary lines, they’re the new ready-to-wear. Pre-collections are what’s actually sustaining the business.”  Apparently 70% of a retailer’s budget goes on pre-collections, which surprises me not one bit.  Their general easy demeanour (no shouty ‘show pieces’ here) mean it’s hard to pin a date on them, thus you can wear them for longer – no wonder canny but stylish consumers are snapping them up.  An added bonus?  The selling window of pre-collections is huge – the Cruise collections will be on sale from November ‘til the summer sales – so no need to panic buy.

And what have I got my beady eye on?  Stella McCartney’s slimline mini-coat, Chloe’s minimalist cigarette pants and Christian Louboutin’s mesh kitten heels (pictured).  That’s just for starters – after all, I have another seven months to decide.
