Get Festive With Fair Isle

fair isle trend latest aw11Named after a tiny Shetland Island, Fair Isle is a traditional knitting technique that is big on colour and large on pattern.

I fell in love with Fair Isle last winter when I found a sweet little knitted dress by Warehouse and wore it to absolute death. Warm and snuggly, it was also incredibly sassy due to a short length and a clingy fit – perfect if you want to be appropriately dressed during the winter without sacrificing your sex appeal.

And that’s what I love about Fair Isle; you can use it to mix practicality with style. Take the Urban Outfitters Fair Isle sweater skirt. It has a body con fit, so it really shows off your curves, but it can be paired with knitted black tights and a chunky top to keep out the cold – and if you like the style of Made in Chelsea’s style icon, Caggie Dunlop, how about wearing it with the boys’ River Island jumper she wore during the final episode of series 2?

For a figure-flattering dress, my fave of this season is Whistles midi-length roll neck jumper dress. Perfect for glamming up your everyday winter wardrobe, this dress will flatter your figure, drawing attention to curves as well as keeping you toasty. Wear with a winter-friendly pair of statement platforms for maximum impact.

Fair Isle doesn’t have to be fitted – or even knitted! The Fair Isle print 70s-style dress by Mimosa is all kinds of gorgeous. With a v-neckline, gathered waist and midi length, it would look 100% hippy chic with Hobo x Bastien Industries Moccasins.

And the boys can get in on the Fair Isle act too. A Christmas knit is no longer corny if you choose an on-trend Fair Isle style, such as Suit’s shawl neck cardigan, Farah’s vintage knitted jumper, Moncler’s simple heritage jumper or Raf Simons fabulously funky jumper, great for a brave dresser.

If you’re looking for Christmas prezzies, you can treat loved ones to a host of Fair Isle accessories for men and women including Urban Outfitters striped Fair Isle beanie and scarf, Hue’s Nordic sweater tights, Fred Perry’s charcoal scarf, the ASOS hooded scarf, Johnstons fingerless gloves, the ASOS headband and Polo Ralph Lauren Fair Isle Socks.

Finally, for a stocking filler with lashings of quality, it has to be Jo Gordon’s beautiful lambswool scarf – worth every penny.
