Cut The Mustard

boohoo mellow yellow trend 2011Whenever black and neutrals are in vogue, there is always a colour backlash – and wearing vibrant mustard is a good way of rebelling.

As a redhead, I’ve never been too sure about wearing yellow – but that was before 2011 came along and blew my preconceptions out of the water. This season’s must-have mustard shade can work with pretty much any hair colour and skin tone. But it does take a bit of work to wear it successfully.

Yellow dresses are hot property, and to perfect the look you must work carefully around your colourful centre-piece. Yellow will highlight your complexion, so if you’re blonde and fair you’ll need strong eye make-up to help frame your face and stop the yellow from “drowning you out”. If you’re dark haired, you may need to tone the make-up and accessories down – the yellow will do a brilliant job of illuminating your face and hair, so make the most of it by choosing neutral shades to wear alongside the mustard. The same applies to redheads; let the mustard do the talking and tone down any potential clashes with nude make-up. Dark brown shoes and accessories can take the edge off a colour explosion too.

When you’re wearing yellow separates, stick to one key piece and let that colour pop; I’m saving up for Motel’s midi length pleated skirt, and I already own a pair of Topshop’s ankle grazer trousers in mustard – they really rock with electric blue shoes and shirt.

You could add a yellow accessory or two to enhance any outfit over the winter, and try popping on a yellow knit to add a ray of sunshine, even when it’s freezing out; I love Fornarina’s cropped cardigan and the mix of yellow and purple in M Missoni’s chunky poncho is the perfect winter warmer.

Pulling off a yellow party dress is tricky because mustard tends to look better in daylight, but if you do fancy making a statement at a Christmas party, choose a high impact dress such as the frill sleeve pencil dress by Hybrid or the two-in-one “Nancy” dress by Motel.

And yellow isn’t just for the ladies. There are some gorgeous looks for guys in mustard too. Take a look at Topman’s mustard jeans and quilted cord sweatshirt, Lee’s mustard cords, Diesel’s mustard check shirt and oki-ni’s flight jacket is seriously standout.
