How To Wear Spots

Spot TrendGoodbye stripes for spring, hello spots for autumn! Or dots, polka dots, blotches, splodges or splatters. Call them what you will, just be aware this trend is going to creep up on us in a big way come the autumn – haven’t you had enough of stripy tops already, I know I have! So spots it is, and all you need to know is that there are few rules here – big, small, misshapen, uneven, the less uniform the better. And don’t just limit yourself to one spotted item, experiment with two or three, why not. Just make sure they’d tied together colourwise to avoid looking too Mad Hatter bonkers. Oversized monochrome spots give a good sixties vibe (another big autumn trend), small polka dots give refined nattiness. This is fun playful fashion, so get cracking with your spots now and you’ll be a dab hand come the autumn.

We’ve come up with a few different spotted looks – let us know what you think!

Masters of Style at Somerset House

Maters of Style - PradaMasters of Style; Celebrating the Stories Behind Italian Fashion, is a newly opened exhibition at Somerset House, which visually documents the journey of six Italian fashion houses. In homage to Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Ferragamo, Gucci, Missoni and Prada the exhibition features campaigns from their archives, illustrating how successfully each house has continually communicated their new visual ideas while also conveying their integral brand DNA and essence over the decades.

An authority on fashion and journalist supremo, Colin McDowell, was asked to curate the exhibition that coincides with the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy. I’ve heard rumblings of disappointment that there were no clothes, to me, clothes on hanger or mannequin speak little volume compared to the creatively conceived, carefully planned and impeccably executed fashion campaigns. Expect to see the finest eye-catching images created by the era’s best, most sought after photographers, stylists, set designers and featuring the best models and designer fashion.

The large empty space of the Embankment Galleries is segregated by 6 individual gauze concertina’s with each housing the images of one of the six Italian brands. Take a visual journey beginning with Gucci’s stong women surrounded by besotted males, moving to the futuristic gloss of Armani’s androgynous models, then to D&G’s combination of Italian polish and Milanese tradition to the sexy kookyness of Prada and concluding with Missoni’s wholesome focus on family.

For anyone interested in the industry this exhibition offers a very interesting insight and couldn’t be more timely as the September issues featuring all the new campaigns are a mere month away!

Masters of Style: Celebrating the Stories Behind Italian Fashion is at Somerset House in the Embankment Galleries until 14th August 2011.

How To Wear AW11 Trends

AW11 Trends

It’s July and mainly sunny, but the fashion forward have decreed it time to start planning for autumn/winter 2011. So we thought we should give you just a little head ups if you can tear yourself away from denim cutoffs, floaty dresses and simple sandals for a moment or two. Autumn/winter 2011 is not too terrifying a prospect and really is building on trends we’ve been getting nice and familiar with this spring/summer, albeit with a more sophisticated, luxe twist. So yes to colour blocking, but in extreme simple silhouettes, yes to a 70s glam vibe but we’re moving into velvet and heeled long boots territory all dressed up with opulent statement accessories and jewellery – the floppy hat, the cocktail ring, the new statement earrings. Prints will still be big, but the trick here is to clash them – this is a fine art which takes a bit of practice training your eye and feeling confident about what works. A tip? Just make sure there’s an element or concept that ties the prints together, a shade of colour hinted at by another or large stripes echoed by small strips. Snakeskin and tribal prints will also be big. Other trends to rock include faux fur (all over the AW11 catwalks), boyish dressing for girls (nab yourself an oversized blazer), capes and a touch of mod and Teddy Boy dressing – embrace those brothel creepers! Micro-trends that will be cropping up include military touches, pencil skirts and ankle grazers (trousers that stop at the ankle, people!). So, there you have it, if you’re one of those super-organised types get thee shopping or if not, relax, enjoy the rest of summer and sort it all out in the autumn.

Festival Fashion: Get The Look

Festival Fashion LooksWe waited with bated breath for the festival fashions from our favourite style icons to stream in over the weekend – yes, it was a sofa Glasto for us this year – and although no one blew our socks off with a fabulously outlandish outfit (Anna dello Russo, please start doing festivals!) what we saw were perfectly pulled together practical festival styles oozing ‘I’m with the band’ cool. What more can you ask for? Suffice to say this year is all about shorts worn with over-sized tees and vests, big jackets (Barbours or leather bikers) and the year in year out staple Hunter wellies (top marks to those who wore Docs or Superga wellies for a bit of a change.) Oh, and don’t forget the dark tinted sunnies, mini chain strap bag and dry shampoo heavy hippie locks.
