How To Wear Jumpsuits

Label Lab cadet jumpsuitIt’s official, jumpsuits are back. It’s not just that we saw them on the catwalks last autumn – Diane von Furstenberg, YSL, Philip Lim 3.1, even Chanel – but it’s a trend that we shoppers just can’t get enough of. Did you know jumpsuits (and the short-legged playsuit or romper) are one of the most highly-searched items on Style Compare? So, with that in mind, and all the fash mags giving their nod (Elle, InStyle, ASOS), there’s no two ways about it. What started a few seasons ago as a flirtation with a cool 70s silhouette for a glam party has now translated into sporty, functional wear and laidback chic for sunny days. Versatility and how good they look when you put them on (on the hanger jumpsuits do not always shine) is what gives this trend wings. Jumpsuits 2011 are more about draped fabrics than structured, so make sure you have a favourite belt on hand for cinching in you waist and make an objective judgement about whether you need heels – basically the lower the crotch and less fitted the leg the more likely extra height will improve the look. For parties channel Studio 54 with brights, white or crazy prints with killer heels and big jewellery, for work go neutrals or safari chic and for festivals denim and florals. Here are three looks we’ve put together to inspire your styling. We’d love to know what you think! How would you wear this trend? Let us know in the comments below.

How To Wear Tribal Prints

Tribal scarf print cutout shoulder topThere’s nothing like bright sunny days to bring on the urge for big, bold prints. And tribal prints – think strong energetic vibrant geometric patterns and batik – are just the ticket this summer. Missoni, Etro and Diane von Furstenberg all played around with tribal prints for their SS11 collection. Get it right and you’re talking full-on diva statement fashion. There are a few ways to approach tribal prints. The most straight forward is to go for a fabulous dress and pair it with neutral flat sandals or eye-popping colour heels – we’re thinking bright neon pink courts for maximum impact. The next option is to choose a print separate – shorts, top or skirt – and team with a neutral (white, creams, tans, black) and/or denim, for a bit of rock n’ roll edge. The last option – and possibly the most difficult – is to team your print with a contrasting print. Sounds mad? But yes, it can be done! Try clashing with narrow stripes – just make sure the stripe ties in shade-wise with a colour on the main print. Then of course, the easy way out is to go throw on a few accessories, but don’t be too tame, this is fashion to have fun with!

How to Wear Lace

Dorothy Perkins Lace DressFrom neon lace separates at Christopher Kane’s SS11 show to simple white lace dresses by Topshop, you can’t move for the intricate, filigree fabric at the moment. And like any popular trend, wearing it is just a matter of getting the rest of the look right. It’s all about balance – lace is very feminine and girly so take the edge off with androgynous sandals or plimsolls for a laidback summer look, or if you are dressing up with it go for a contrasting heel (for some reason wedges don’t work so well with lace) and long-strapped mini-bag worn across the body. A lace body under a crop top with cotton slacks is a great way to give a bit of edge to a fresh look. White lace – not just the preserve of under-25s as demonstrated by Uma Thurman at Cannes – is perfect for summer days and nights, you can accessorise with tan leather belt, sandal and bag for a boho look or glam it up with pointy patent courts instead. Black lace, with its vampy connotations, can be incorporated into a nude palette (think light cotton jackets or slacks) or eye-popping colours – part and parcel of this season’s colour-blocking trend, so work with one or two contrasting or complementary brights for maximum impact. Here are a few looks we have created…
